Toyota Sequoia – Toyota’s Full-Size SUV Powerhouse

The Toyota Sequoia is Toyota’s largest SUV, built for families, towing, and serious long-distance comfort. First launched in 2001 for the North American market, the Sequoia has always shared its platform with the Toyota Tundra pickup, giving it a rugged, body-on-frame foundation. The current generation, introduced in 2023, brought a major shift — ditching the old V8 in favor of Toyota’s modern i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain.

Performance & Capability

Under the hood, every new Sequoia packs a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid producing 437 horsepower and a huge 583 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and comes in either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, depending on the trim. This combination gives the Sequoia serious muscle for towing — up to 9,520 lbs — making it a great choice for hauling boats, campers, or heavy trailers. Despite its size, the hybrid system improves efficiency to around 20–22 mpg combined, which is respectable for a full-size SUV.

Interior & Comfort

Inside, the Sequoia offers space for seven or eight passengers, depending on whether you go for second-row captain’s chairs or a bench seat. The cabin is designed for comfort on long trips, with available heated and ventilated seats, high-quality leather, and even massaging seats in the luxury-focused 1794 Edition. Technology is a highlight, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a large infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an available premium JBL sound system.

Cargo space behind the third row is about 22.3 cubic feet, but with the seats folded flat, it opens up considerably for large loads. For 2026, Toyota made power-folding third-row seats standard across all trims, adding extra convenience.

Design & Trims

The Sequoia’s exterior is bold, with a wide stance and muscular fenders. Trims range from the practical SR5 to the luxury-oriented Platinum and 1794 Edition, and even the off-road-ready TRD Pro, which gets skid plates, all-terrain tires, and a lifted suspension. A new “Wave Maker” blue color has also been added to the TRD Pro lineup for the latest model year.

Safety & Reliability

Like most modern Toyotas, the Sequoia comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense suite, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. Toyota has a strong reliability track record, though a recall was recently issued for 2023–2024 hybrid models due to a tow hitch defect — now being fixed free of charge.

In Summary

The Toyota Sequoia is a large, comfortable, and capable SUV that combines serious towing strength with modern hybrid efficiency. Whether you’re using it as a family hauler, a road-trip companion, or a workhorse for towing heavy loads, it delivers a balanced mix of power, space, and Toyota’s signature durability.
